WHY Fantastic blood-orange marmalade, thin-sliced bread-and-butter pickles, pickled peaches, boysenberry jam and such modern creations as raspberry-chipotle sauce.
WHAT This fourth-generation preserves maker still occupies the original family factory and citrus farm hidden in plain sight in impossibly atmospheric Sierra Madre. It does the soul good to see places like this not just surviving, but thriving (thanks to the internet and savvy management by the founder’s grandson, Richard Ward, and his son, Jeff Ward). Worth a trek.
