WHY The quiet bar is a great pre- or post-movie or theater spot for a glass of wine and a burger or Korean tacos; if you have more time and money, head for the lovely dining room.
WHAT After spending the last couple of years building a loyal clientele for his catering and tiny lunchtime café, chef Onil Chibás has finally seen his dream come true — but then his large and elegant new restaurant next door to the Pasadena Playhouse opened a mere two weeks before the theatre unexpectedly shut down. So far this is not causing a problem — everyone who’s anyone in Pasadena is showing up to try the inventive, seasonal menu, which is organized by principal ingredient (duck, squash, eggs, etc.) instead of by course. We wished the game hen cassoulet was a little less salty and the gorgeous “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” omelet wasn’t a bit overcooked, but we’ll be back for the Bolivian roast chicken, the flank steak and kim chee tacos, and the white chocolate and coffee mousse with a chocolate ganache.
WHO A connected crowd of Pasadena’s nonprofit leaders, politicians, business folks and Caltechers.
