Nickel Diner

EatLA-1298

WHY Bacon maple doughnuts.

WHAT This retro diner at Main and 5th (5th being called ‘the Nickel’ by the tougher locals in this hardscrabble neighborhood) has won local fame for bringing L.A. the bacon doughnut. But that’s not the only thing worth eating here. Come for any of the very good breakfast dishes, like the egg scramble with bacon, goat cheese, garlic and spinach, or a lunchtime sandwich or salad, or skip all that and go straight for the chocolate peanut-butter potato-chip layer cake.

WHO Not nearly as many annoying hipsters as you might think—instead, it’s a good cross-section of Downtown residents, workers and explorers.
