Slaw Dogs

EatLA-1694

WHY West Virginia may have figured out a long time ago that cole slaw goes good on a hot dog, but here in California it’s a revelation.

WHAT You can create your own dog from the many varieties and toppings, but you won’t do better than the house-designed versions, which are actually really good salads on top of pretty good sausages. Condensed into a bun, the ingredients play off each other like a jazz combo. Try the Caesar Dog (chicken sausage and Caesar salad), the Thai Slaw Dog (spicy peanut-coconut satay dressing, cilantro-carrot slaw, crushed peanuts and Sriracha aioli) or, perhaps best of all, the Picnic Dog, a char-broiled Vienna beef link, barbecue sauce, onion rings, potato salad and a pickle. Is it an unusual combination that seems obvious, or an obvious combination that seems unusual? Who cares! You’ll scarf it down in three minutes flat. Choose the onion rings over the underseasoned Belgian fries.

Visited Slaw Dogs today, and ordered their original number one for take out, with a half order of French fries. Very disappointing. After walking to my vehicle to eat, I opened up aluminum foil wrapped dog to find completely soggy roll, and unmanageable slaw dog. I.e., try to eat essentially a dish of slaw-chili with a indescript hot dog somewhere in the mix. French fries were good, if standard. Lesson here to the kitchen? Think about how you serve your food; don’t just throw it into a take-out container. ‘Not sure if I’ll go back given the experience, but who knows…
