South Pasadena Certified Farmers’ Market

EatLA-1253

WHY This is one of the greenest markets in town, because you don’t have to drive—it’s right off the Gold Line Mission stop.

WHAT Formerly ho-hum (a half -dozen clown acts!), this market has become a star thanks to new, strong management, which has brought many new vendors as well as chef demos and food talks at the adjacent SoPas library. Look for Rancho Mi Familia, McGrath, Bernard Ranch, Yasutomi (low-acid Momotaro tomatoes), Suncoast (artichokes, asparagus, cauliflower), J & J (grass-fed beef) and Organic Pastures’ dairy. Non-ag stalls of note include Carmela’s ice creams and the Panini stand, former Ršckenwagner bakers who make their own rolls for fresh-pressed sandwiches). Who needs a carnival when you have idyllic grassy areas where kids can romp and charming cafés where you can sip a post-market glass of rosé?

WHO Students from nearby Cordon Bleu Culinary Academy, young couples shopping after work, artists, teens—an affluent mix of all ages.

Meridian Ave. at Mission St., , 626.403.2820, ci.south-pasadena.ca.us/about/farmersmarket.html. Thurs. 4-8 p.m. Cash only.
