The 90-degree temperatures arrived just in time, because Beer Week has begun, and we’re all getting a little thirsty. This “first annual” event is really a series of events at restaurants and pubs all over town, culminating in a festival at Descanso Gardens on Saturday, October 24th.
Here’s a link to the calendar of events for the week, and a short list of the ones that sound most appealing to us:
Saturday: It’s going to be beach weather on Saturday, so head to Naja’s Place in Redondo Beach for the launch party for the Strand Brewing Company, a new craft brewery based in Torrance.
Sunday: Oktoberfest, Verdugo Bar. Such German beers as Hacker-Pschorr, Kostritzer and others we can’t spell; $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
Monday: Downtown L.A. Collaboration Night, with tastings and food at Wurstküche (five wheat beers to try), BottleRock (Firestone Walker brews) and Seven Grand (no special beer, but aged bourbon for your nightcap pleasure).
Tuesday: Schmaltz Beer Dinner at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks; $50 for a big barbecue dinner at all sorts of HE’BREW beers. Alternate: Home brewer’s class at Culver City Home Brewing Supply for just $5.
Wednesday: Uptown Whittier Pub Crawl; eight venues will pair beers and food for just $8.
Thursday: There are so many good beer-lover’s events this night we can barely choose, but if we have to pick just one, it would be the Craftsman Beer Dinner at the York in Highland Park, for a more than reasonable $35.
Friday: It’s Meet the Brewer Night at Lucky Baldwin’s in Old Pasadena; you can meet Chimay’s head brewer, Dominique Denis, and join in the fun of opening a six-liter Grand Reserve Methuselah, plus taste Chimay cheeses.
Saturday: The big festival, to be held in Descanso’s five-acre Rosarium. Your $40 ticket buys entrance and unlimited four-ounce pours of beer from all over the state and the world. Food is extra, and they’re selling “designated driver” tickets for $5. One catch: No tickets at the door; you must order in advance here.
