Go Go’ers, we’ve done our best to skirt the edges of the season (kind of ) but the world is (maybe) ending so let’s go out with a kiss and a bang, shall we?
Ms. Go Go herewith presents the best of the happy, merry, holiday ho-ho-hoping-you’re-having-a-swell-time events-around-town.
It’s a good time in the City of Angels.
Making Xmas Hot Hot Hot!
Right around now, you could use some jungle growls, exotic bird calls and also, boobams.
Um, they’re percussion instruments. Grow up.
Just in time to cool your jungle fever (or heat up the holidays), the Exotica (with an “x”) supergroup led by Kit “Perry Coma” Ebersbach, makes its debut appearance in LaLa Land with Don Tiki’s Hot Lava Holiday Show. Expect lush rhythms and an evocative trip through Polynesiana with top caliber musicians, girls in grass skirts, comedy stylings, and special guests.
A little rum punch in the flask and you’ll make it through the holidays just fine.
DON TIKI’S HOT LAVA HOLIDAY SHOW — Thurs, Dec 20, 8 pm; $31-$89 – Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S Grand Ave, DTLA (323) 850-2000, laphil.com.
Drinking Tequila at the End of the World
Take a break from your just-in-case Doomsday prep — you’ve scored with luxe pup tents and gluten-free treats-in-a-pouch — and go to Apocalypto The Awakening. Tonight is the once-in-a-lifetime (or maybe the end of your lifetime) end-of-days extravaganza hosted by Apocalypto Tequila and Los Angeles Brewing Company and featuring sexy dancing girls.
You always choose sexy dancing girls over zombies and smoky ash.
La Muerte Vive (Santos de Los Angeles, the Player St. Orchestra and Miss Ruby Champagne) put a positive spin on potential Yucatan-predicted Armageddon with their signature “rock opera-meets-cabaret”/carpa style theater and countdown to the start of the New Era, Mayan-style.
Did Ms. Go Go mention the giant Judas puppets?
SO much better than the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse….
APOCALYPTO THE AWAKENING – Thurs, Dec 21 @ 8pm; $20-$150; 21+ — Los Angeles Brewing Company, 750 S Broadway, DTLA 90014 http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/301761 (Note: no connection with Mel Gibson or his oeuvre.)
So Naughty. So Nice.
If you have out-of-town guests who are more into fur-trimmed bustiers than baking fruit cake (probably most/all of them), make rezzies now for Friday’s final performance of A Down & Dirty Christmas at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre. Director Vanessa Cate’s lace-corset-meets-A Christmas Carol sketch show features a cappella carols, dirty dancing, drag boys, lots of pretty girls and a snail puppet.
Go on, jingle those bells.
A Winter Weirderland
If you’re ready to chuck some fruitcake through a window right about now, you’ll want to let off some ’tis-the-reason-for-the-season steam at the Cinefamily Everything is Terrible Holiday Special.
Norman Rockwell it ain’t.
The collective, les enfants terrible of found footage, have expanded upon their collection of see-it-to-believe-it, Christmas bad taste VHS clippage. Brace yourself for erotic Santas, Nazi elves, Toys-for-Tots fistfights, and an ad nauseam array of caroling children that will either restore your good humor or wish that the Beast with Seven Heads had run amok the day before.
That’s assuming it doesn’t/didn’t/won’t.
EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE HOLIDAY SPECIAL – Sat, Dec 22 @ 9:30pm & 12midnight; $12 — Cinefamily, 611 N Fairfax, LA 90036 323.655.2510 http://www.cinefamily.org/
A Very Merry Celebration
Go Go’ers, the L.A. County Supervisors don’t often give you a gift but when they do, it’s a doozy. No unwrapping necessary for the L.A. County Holiday Celebration, which kicks off the Big Day for realzies with a 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Christmas Eve program that’s heavy on local art orgs from dance troupes to choirs to musicians.
The Supervisors probably aren’t expecting a thank-you note.
Culture vultures anticipating a surfeit of Santa-capped grey-hairs warbling about wise men can look forward to hip-o-cratic offerings such as Los Cafeteras, Vaud & the Villains, and Laura Karlin’s Invertigo Dance Theatre (pictured). Preview the rest of the Think Global/Art Local line-up at HolidayCelebration.org. Admission and parking are free and no tickets or reservations are needed.
Which is almost as big a present as the art itself….
L.A. COUNTY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION — Mon, Dec 24, 3-6pm; FREE — The Music Center, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N Grand Ave, DTLA 213.972.3099 L.A. County Holiday Celebration Listen on KPFK-FM, watch live broadcast on KCET-TV (repeating at 8pm and on Dec. 25 at noon), or streaming on kcet.org.
Ready? U Know U Want 2 Go Go….
The L.A. County Holiday Celebration was incorrectly identified as the Music Center Celebration. Ms. Go Go regrets the error.
