Go Go’ers, we’ve survived Halloween. The Election is behind us. Now it’s just time to have fun.
You know how to do that.
Old School Blues/New School Yuks
Original SNL cast member/current 2 Broke Girls cast member Garrett Morris may be in his 70′s but he’s still the coolest guy in any room. Morris and club co-owner Kevin Garnier have moved the Garrett Morris Downtown Comedy Club to the uber-hip Alexandria Hotel and are kicking off the launch with a two-day Blues and Comedy Fest.
Which just happens to be your preferred way to kick off a weekend.
Luenell and Brett Baker head the fest; funny men and women include Jennifer Coolidge and Jonathan Kite while legends like The Deacon Jones Blues Band and the Martin Guigui All Star Blues Band show the young ‘uns how to get it done. If you’re lucky, Garrett Morris might get up and sing.
You’ll want to be there for that.
FIRST ANNUAL BLUES AND COMEDY FEST — Fri, Nov 9th and Sat, Nov 10th; doors @ 8pm/perf @ 9pm; $20 — Garrett Morris’ Downtown Blues and Comedy Club, 501 S Spring St, DTLA 90013; 213.841.3940; for info & tix: http://bluesandcomedy.com/
250 Wines and Rebel You
Wine Riot bills itself as “two parts education and one part revolution”. Comrade, you’ll want to do your part for the cause this Saturday when the Wine Riot’s Dear Leaders set up shop at Majestic Hall, bringing wine experts, interactive booths and crash courses on how to conquer the (wine) world one stemmed glass at a time.
Your rallying cry? ”No Surrender”
DJs will keep the rebel fervor high, a photo booth will document the damage, and temp tattoos prove your ideological purity. For further vinoteca domination, there’s an app that tracks your favorite wines and shows you where to buy them later.
Viva la revolution….
WINE RIOT — 7-11 Sat, Nov 10th. Riot 1 from 1 – 5 pm/Riot 2 from pm; $50/21+ — Majestic Halls, 650 S Spring, DTLA 90014; https://secondglass.com/wineriot/los-angeles-2012/tickets/
Back in the day, cannibal headhunters roamed the island of Borneo.
On Saturday night, however, there will be no shrunken heads…or shrunken stomachs…at EATS of Borneo, the benefit for art mag East of Borneo featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning food journalist Jonathan Gold and Top Chef judge Krista Simmons.
Just to be clear, they’ll be guests, not grub.
Joining the esteemed gourmands at Blum & Poe will be 20+ chefs — artists, writers and curators — who will create signature dishes and desserts for the fundraiser such as Ivette Soler’s Savory Pibil Masa Cakes topped with Yucatecan Red Onion Relish and served with a shot of Hot Pepper Tequila and Stacey Allan’s Fried Chicken & Waffle Cookie: The Roscoe. The latter is a “spicy maple cornflake cookie sprinkled with black pepper and sugar”.
So, pretty much what you figured.
The “a la carte” ticket ($35 in advance; $40 at the door) gets you food and a drink; the $80 “Prix Fixe” gives you unlimited food and drink, an “EATS of Borneo” mug, and five raffle tickets. You’ll want to seriously consider the latter option; the many raffle prizes include a “Glutton’s Delight”package from the Parker Palm Springs, Bowling and a Signature Punch Bowl from the Spare Room, and…wait for it…Martinis with Roger Corman.
Ms. Go Go would brave headhunters for that cocktail date.
EATS FOR BORNEO — Sat, Nov 10, 6-11 pm; $35 in advance, $40 at the door, $80 “Prix Fixe” — Blum & Poe, 2727 S La Cienega Blvd, LA 90034 http://www.eastofborneo.org/eats
Left Coast Love
The Superstorm Sandy-ravaged East Coast is being hit with another storm so this Sunday’s LA hearts NY emergency relief fundraiser couldn’t be more timely.
DJs at the 2-6:00 p.m. event at Space 15Twenty in Hollywood include KCRW’s Chris Douridas, Pop Levi, Cat Power (Gregg Foreman and Nico Turner), and Tracy Marcellino (Oh Boy Les Mecs).
100% of the funds raised from the silent auction, drinks, bake sale, Intelligentsia coffee bar, and “Tarotscopes” will go to Renegade Sandy Relief, a completely volunteer effort organized by New York Times photographer iO Tillet Wright, indie-musician Holly Miranda, and Lane Sanders, lawyer/owner of ‘The Drink’.
The org formed out of an immediate need to reach…and feed….trapped elderly tenants of high rises in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Funds raised on Sunday will go towards building supplies.
Can’t make Sunday’s event? You can donate directly to Renegade Sandy Relief via their PayPal at email@example.com; label your donation “Sandy Relief”. To donate to LA hearts NY, including silent auction items, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
LA hearts NY — Sun, Nov 11 from 2-6 pm – Space 15 Twenty, 1520 N Cahuenga Blvd, LA 90028; for more info
