School’s out for summer.
The weather is perfect.
And your every creative jonesing can be satisfied with a fest.
Also, parties, cocktails and cake…
…a.k.a. the icing on the weekend.
“Fringe” usually means an alternative version of a more established event. But while the Hollywood Fringe Festival‘s programming runs the gamut because of its non-juried, “Let’s put on a show!” acceptance policy, it’s established itself as a front-and-center L.A. institution in just four years.
Go Go’ers, that’s longer than some republics last.
The 18-day performing arts fest, which features 300 shows at over two dozen venues, launches its 5th season on Thursday. Of course, Ms. Go Go has her eye on a few shows: Total Novice by The Moth StorySLAM champion David Rodwin; the family-friendly The True Life Adventures of Barbie and GI Joe with two-time Best of Hollywood Fringe Extension winner Bill Ratner and Deadwood, CSI & True Blood veteran Clay Wilcox; and the rave-reviewed, Van Morrison song-inspired Linden Arden Stole the Highlights, in its first L.A. incarnation since 1998.
And as seen on America’s Got Talent, the fest offers a solid Father’s Day contender for kids 12+: David and Leeman Present: Magic and other Dangerous Things.
Go Go’ers, as Dad’s Day gifts go, it can’t be more dangerous than a band saw….

Go Go’ers, clear your schedules. The L.A. Design Festival 2014 is in town and you’ll want to stage a staycation.
The three-week, design-a-palooza celebrates local and international talent with 60+ all-around-town events including special installations, tours, and (hurray!) happy hours and parties.
Ms. Go Go is talking Don’t Miss events every day of the week.
The fun starts Friday on the East Side with one of the Fest’s self-guided Design Hookey tours. Check out public art installations, wander through hip hotels, famous artists’ studios, and cutting edge retail showrooms, and sip and sup at design-charged bars and restos.
Cocktails are important for design appreciation.
Then, head to the historic Jensen Recreation Center in Echo Park for the official, Friday night kick-off party at Natural Curiosities design studio. In addition to live silkscreen printing workshops and beats by dublab, design maven Gere Kavanaugh will receive the Julia Morgan ICON Award, which recognizes pioneering women in design.
Ms. Go Go thinks Ms. Kavanaugh deserves a toast, don’t you?

50 Shades of Decadent Delish
Whether you’re a sweets freak, a do-gooder with a cupcake fetish, or one of the thousands of people who’s left behind a copy of 50 Shades of Grey in a Travelodge (wink, wink) you’ll want to check out 50 Shades of Cake: Nancy Buchanan’s photo series at Future Studio Gallery this Saturday.
Worried the show will be all frustrated desire and empty calories?
Fear not…gallerist Amy Inouye is pairing Buchanan’s photos with a Depressed Cake Shop Pop-up. The global organization, started in the UK by Emily Cakehead (yes, really), uses the sale of volunteer-baked, grey — but delicious! — sweets to both raise awareness of mental health issues worldwide and to raise money for local charities.
100% of the 50 Shades of Cake bake sale profits will benefit the Northeast Wellness Center’s Positive Visions program, which will also receive a portion of the proceeds of Buchanan’s print sales. There will also be arts and crafts from Positive Visions participants at the show, which is held in conjunction with NELAArt Second Saturday Gallery Night; 100% of the arts and crafts profits will go directly to the artists.
Future Studio neighbor The Greyhound Bar and Grill will provide no-host coffee and iced tea to accompany the sweets, which include baked goods by caterer extraordinaire/Prospect Park Book cookbook author Jennie Cook (Who Wants Seconds?).
Fair warning: Ms. Go Go WILL be first in line for dessert dibs.
