The Weekend Go Go: Tiki Luau, Australian Wagons and Spirit of the Times

If the plumeria throne fits….

Ms. Go Go is tres desolee at the lateness of The Weekend Go Go due to deadlines and  birthdays (not mine!)

And such a fun weekend, too! Let’s Go Go now!

Tiki-ti One On

Go Go’ers, is there anything more festive than  Tiki?  Indulge your love of all things South Seas balmy and carved at American Cinematheque‘s Luau Night at the Egyptian Theater.  King Kukulele & The Friki Tikis and the Polynesian Paradise Dancers shake it up in the courtyard at 5:00 p.m. while you sip $5 Mai Tais and Pina Coladas.  Luau dinners are sold out online but those partial to pineapple chicken skewers and other island fare may luck out if supplies last at the door.

May the tiki gods be ever in your favor….

The King (Kukulele, not Presley) will also narrate the Tiki Volume 1 – Paradise Lost: a fab  documentary of global tiki that  features veteran and present-day artistes de tiki including writers (Sven Kirsten!), musicians (Combustible Edison!), painters and illustrators  (Shag! Eric Askew!), and, of course, bartenders!  (Hooray for all!)

Your burning tiki questions  (How many hula dancers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?) will be answered by director Jochen Hirschfeld and guests from the doc at a post-film Q&A .

Bali Hai!

TIKI NIGHT/AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE — Sat, Aug 4, 5pm (drinks/dinner); 7:30pm (film); $11 – $30; all ages — Egyptian Theater, 6712 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood 90028, http://www.americancinemathequecalendar.com/egyptian_theatre_events

Circle the Wagons at The Grand Ole Echo on August 5th!

Wagons Ho!

Kim Grant’s Grand Ole Echo has the best summer hoedown around (and a Los Angles Magazine “Best of LA – Best Urban Honky Tonk” to prove it!) but this weekend’s show is Big Deal even by their swell standards:  Aussie twangers Henry Wagons and Wagons are up from  Down Under.  Wagons is a notably charismatic performer (and voted one of “Australia’s 100 Most Influential People”!)  so put on your pointy-toe boots and perambulate over to celebrate their new album Rumble, Shake & Tumble.

Luckily, you know how to do those things.

Stephen Sowan, then Damngivers will kick off while wunderkind Phoebe Bridgers keeps it acoustic on the Back Porch.

Sunday, meet happy.

Yes, please…. Artisanal Spirits of the Times at Sadie, August 6th.

Spirited Away

Monday fast approaches but hey, it’s still summer, dammit, so make Monday “Funday”, courtesy of the L.A. Times- hosted “Spirits of the Times” at Sadie’s oh-so-pretty night porch.  Artisanal spirits like Karlsson’s Gold Vodka, Pink Pigeon Rum and Lepanto Brandy will make appearances in cocktails you can vote on (Oh, the power….) while you munch apps and look as swell as Sadie does.

‘Course, everyone’s prettier with a cocktail in hand. Even you.
