Not only is York Boulevard in Highland Park blessed with a few good taco trucks (including La Estrella at Avenue 54 and the great El Pique at Avenue 53), as well as bars, restaurants and a fine new coffeehouse, but it also has several street-food vendors that set up shop at night.
We checked out the one on the north side of the street at Nolden Street the other night and were not sorry. The centerpiece is the al pastor spit, where pineapple-infused marinated pork cooks, schwarma-style; there’s also some chorizo on the grill and a big pot of simmering beef parts, all of which end up on tiny tortillas. The carne asada was fine but unremarkable; it’s the pastor that’s outstanding, tender and subtly sweet.
Add some onion, cilantro and a wee bit of the fiery salsa verde, and you’ve got yourself a $2 dinner that’ll see you through a few drinks at the York or Johnnie’s.
