Riverside citrus ranchers Vicki, Vince, and A.J. Bernard have come up with a great value-added idea — squeezing fresh citrus juices to order at the farmers’ markets. Yup, it’s that fresh. Riverside is a primo citrus region, and summer fruits yield intensely sweet juice. $3 buys you a 12-ounce glass of Valencia orange (splashed with blood orange juice for the next two weeks); pink or white marsh grapefruit; oro blanco juices; or a custom blend. The Bernards also offer freshly squeezed lemon juice (not lemonade). You can also buy by the pint ($4), quart ($7), and half gallon ($14), in addition to getting whole fruit to juice yourself. The longtime farming family invested in all the right stuff —professional juicers and a tent that meets all the regulations — making a commitment to give us the opportunity to enjoy their fruit at its best. They’ve been squeezing for a while at the Beverly Hills Sunday market, but just debuted the juice program at the Santa Monica market on July 1, and plan to continue at least through September.
