We are all so very, very sad to hear that L.A.’s one and only cookbook store, Cook’s Library, will be going out of business at the end of April. And we’re not just saying that because EAT: Los Angeles and the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market Cookbook sold so well there. For the last twenty years it has been one of L.A.’s most important culinary centers, as essential to the city’s food culture as Spago and the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. Now where will cooks sit on a Thursday afternoon, talking to Tim or Ellen about what to do with their bumper crop of avocados? This is a dark day for L.A. food lovers.
One small comfort is the boffo sale that kicks off on Monday. They really need to clear the place out and are asking all of us to come shop the sale. So get there while the getting’s good — see if you can snag a copy of two of our recent personal favorites, Blue Eggs and Yellow Tomatoes and Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics, or the book we want for our birthday, Bon Appetit, Y’All. And since you’re there, don’t forget to pick up a copy of the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market Cookbook and EAT: Los Angeles.Â

I read this news late last night and was in a funk until I drifted off to sleep. There are so few gathering places for home cooks, and none are as welcoming as Cook’s Library.
I always made it a point to buy cookbooks there so I could support a local small business, which makes it extra-sad to hear that it’ll be going away.
