Going Greek

A barbecue chef at last year's Greek Festival

A barbecue chef at the Greek Festival

If you, like us, can never get your fill of moussaka, spanakopita, kalamata olives, gyros and baklava, and if seeing My Big Fat Greek Wedding 47 times hasn’t tired you of saying, “Opa!” over and over, then you’ll want to spend a Memorial weekend afternoon or evening at the annual Valley Greek Festival, an impressive shindig sponsored by St. Nicholas Church that draws some 50,000 visitors each year. There’s lots more besides food, of course: dancing, music, church tours, and rides and games for kids. But really it’s the food, which is robust, aromatic, inexpensive and plentiful. Fun cooking demonstrations, too. And here’s a statistic to whet your whistle — the good ladies of the church make 48,000 pastries for the weekend.
