Happy Anniversary

We celebrate our own anniversaries at our favorite restaurants, but the restaurant’s notable years can pass by without a blink. Here are a few L.A. greats that are celebrating milestones this year in wood (5th), china (20th), silver (25th) and pearls (30th)… or celebrating in just darn good food, with a few anniversary specials tossed into the mix.

Hugo's Pasta Mama

Providence

A Kumamoto oyster–spiked meal is never inexpensive here, but the fantastic seafood from chef Michael Cimarusti is well worth the splurge. And with Providence celebrating its 5th anniversary with a $65, five-course menu during the month of June (the tasting menu typically begins at $110 for nine courses), you’ve got one more reason to treat yourself to a white-glove dinner.

Yujean Kang’s

With so many trendsetters hitting the scene, it’s too easy to forget our tried-and-true—but still sophisticated—favorites, like Yujean Kang’s, which is celebrating its 20th. Chef Kang takes Chinese cooking to a higher level, from his tea-smoked duck salad with black-bean sauce to his Szechwan crispy beef with sautéed vegetables. This elegant Old Town spot boasts a serious wine list, white-tablecloth service and prices that seem lower than they did a decade ago—lunch is a particular bargain, with $8 to $10 entrees that come with soup and Kang’s fine chicken salad.

Chaya Brasserie
This L.A. pioneer set the standard for French-Japanese-American cooking 25 years ago with its inventive food in a chic bistro space with a cool vibe—and somehow it has defied the ravages of time and remains cool today. Great at lunch for salads and such, or heftier fare at dinner; we especially love the happy-hour bargains at all three Chayas.
8741 Alden Dr., Beverly Hills, 310.859.8833, thechaya.com, L Fri., D nightly.

That famous Pasta Mama (a breakfast pasta scramble with eggs, spaghetti, Parmesan and herbs) will be out in full force as Hugo’s in West Hollywood celebrates its 30th this year (hard as it is to believe), and the Sherman Oaks spinoff celebrates its 10th anniversary. Creative brunch comfort food at its best, with an increasing focus on sustainability and some of the better vegetarian and vegan options in town.

8401 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, 323.654.3993. hugosrestaurant.com, B, L & D daily, brunch Sat.-Sun.
