Last week we offered up a few ideas to satisfy the eaters on your list this holiday season. Here is our last-minute gift list for those who always politely decline the home-baked slice of pie but can’t go a day without a cup or three of organic coffee or a bottle of good red wine.
Absinthe spoon and vintage cocktail glass from Bar Keeper
This Silver Lake cocktail haven has everything the mixology-obsessed could ever desire. An absinthe spoon is a classy choice, but throw in a vintage cocktail glass and a copy of Absinthe: History in a Bottle, Barnaby Conrad III’s addictive read about the social history of the Green Fairy, and you’ll surely be deemed the best gift-giver of the year.
3910 W. Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake, 323.669.1675, barkeepersilverlake.com
Fair Trade coffee from Cafecito Organico
This local company roasts its fair trade beans from Ethiopia, El Salvador, Peru and Mexico twice a week. Twelve-ounce bags are a very reasonable $10 to $13, or you can hit all the coffee goodwill at once and spring for a five-pound bag ($55) of organic, fair trade, and rainforest-friendly coffee from Santa Teresa Estate in El Salvador. Divide it up in festive bags for your friends — and while you’re at it, keep a pound for yourself.
Available at the Saturday Silver Lake and Sunday Hollywood Farmers’ Markets and at store.cafecitoorganico.com.
Pinot Noir from Pali Wine Co.
Nearly two dozen Pinot Noir–loving Pacific Palisades friends and co-workers founded this Santa Barbara County winery in 2005. Their 2007 vintage, released this fall, includes several highly rated wines from premier Pinot Noir regions including Santa Barbara County, Russian River Valley and Oregon’s Williamette Valley (Grenache and Chardonnay are also available). You can purchase the wines in the tasting room (open Friday and Saturday or by appointment) or online.
1036 W. Aviation Dr., Lompoc, 805.736.7200, paliwineco.com
Root beer from Margo’s Bark
Your canine-loving friends will appreciate a four-pack (about $7) of this natural, cane-sugar root beer from Margo’s Bark, the soda company founded by local elementary school student Oscar Youd and his family earlier this year and named after their family dog. The family donates all net proceeds to local dog charities.
Available at many Bristol Farms and Whole Foods, as well as Joan’s on Third, Vicente Foods and other local markets or at margosbark.com.
2 Turtle Doves Ale from The Bruery
If you need a gift for a beer geek, the Bruery’s 2 Turtle Doves is about as cheeky as you can get, plus the ale comes in an elegant, gift-ready 750 ml bottle ($11). This is the second in the Placentia brewery’s annual “Twelve Beers of Christmas” series; this year’s batch is a rich, wintery ale brewed with cocoa nibs, toasted pecans and caramelized sugar to mimic the flavor profile of chocolate-caramel-pecan turtles candies (we told you it was cheeky — but good). Hit the tasting room, open Fridays through Sundays only, to pick up your bottles. While you’re there, taste the Bruery’s half dozen other seasonal Belgian-style beers, including the heavily spiced Autumn Maple ale, brewed with yams and maple syrup. The bonus: Each of those oversized bottles is big enough to fill a stocking on its own.
715 Dunn Way, Placentia, thebruery.com; also available at well-stocked beer and wine shops.
Wine Class at City Sip
This Echo Park wine bar and shop offers intimate weeknight tasting classes ($50) every two weeks so you can send your friends to learn their Pragers from their Quiviras. January wine classes include the basics of wine tastings as well as a varietal-specific class on Syrah. Food pairings, usually several interesting cheeses plus house-made appetizers, are always in the mix.
2150 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park, 213.483.WINE.
